Carien holds a distinguished academic background that includes a BA LLB from Stellenbosch University, an Advanced Certificate in Tax Law from UNISA, an LLM in Banking Law from the University of Johannesburg, an LLM in Constitutional Property Law from UNISA, and an LLM in International European Business Law from Trinity College Dublin. This diverse legal education equips her with a broad and nuanced understanding of both domestic and international legal frameworks.

Before joining the bar, Carien practised as an attorney, completing her articles of clerkship at Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr in 2011. She subsequently worked at the Legal Resources Centre, specialising in property law and the right to housing, areas in which she remains passionate and highly skilled.

Throughout her career, Carien has appeared in various High Courts across South Africa, representing a diverse range of private and commercial clients. She is also an accredited commercial mediator, with experience mediating commercial disputes.
