Gavin Marriott

Gavin holds BSc (Chemistry, Biochemistry and Law) and LLB degrees from Rhodes University.

Prior to joining the bar, Gavin qualified as a patent attorney and practiced in all fields of intellectual property law.  Having completed his articles at Bowman Gilfillan, Gavin spent three years practising as a solicitor at the Linklaters’ London and Hong Kong offices. On his return to South Africa, Gavin joined Adams & Adams where he was made a partner in 2006.

Gavin specialises in both intellectual property and competition law.  He appears regularly before the Supreme Court of Appeal, the Competition Appeal Court, the Court of the Commissioner of Patents, the High Court and the Competition Tribunal.  He was first listed as one of the world’s leading patent lawyers by Who’s Who Legal every year since 2014.

Gavin has appeared in more than 120 reported cases in South Africa, a list of which is available here . Gavin also contributed the intellectual property chapters in Precedents for Applications in Civil Proceedings.
