Kevin Iles

Kevin holds BSc (biochemistry, zoology, microbiology), BSc(Hons) (molecular biology) and LLB degrees from UCT and an LLM in international intellectual property from Duke University in the United States of America.

Prior to joining the bar, Kevin qualified as an attorney and notary and practiced in all fields of intellectual property law, commercial litigation, medical negligence and white collar crime. He practised at Bowman Gilfillan in Johannesburg from 2005 – 2012.

Before becoming an attorney he was a clerk at the Constitutional Court of South Africa and a researcher at the Community Law Centre of the University of the Western Cape.

Kevin is a general commercial litigator with particular experience in intellectual property. He also practices in the areas of insurance, banking, insolvency, company law, contract, delict, pension funds litigation, administrative law, franchising and consumer protection, insurance and medical negligence.

Kevin has appeared in more than 20 reported cases in South Africa, a list of which is available here. He contributed chapters to the popular work Precedents for Applications in Civil Proceedings and has contributed to works on HIV and the law (writing the insurance chapter) and the Bill of Rights Handbook. He has written five peer-reviewed articles for foreign and local law journals and has one peer-reviewed scientific publication.

He is an experienced arbitrator and mediator and is a member of AFSA’s and IPACSA’s panel of arbitrators. He is an advocacy trainer for the Johannesburg Bar.
