Michael Dafel

Michael runs a broad practice, with particular interests in constitutional law, commercial litigation, arbitration, and public-law disputes with regulatory and commercial dimensions.

Michael has been involved in matters before the Constitutional Court of South Africa, the Supreme Court of Appeal, several divisions of the High Court, and private arbitrations.

In addition to his litigation practice, Michael is an accredited Conflict Dynamics Mediator, reflecting an interest in dispute-resolution processes alongside adjudicative remedies.

Michael holds a PhD from the University of Cambridge and an LLM from New York University. He completed his LLB (with distinction) and BCom Honours: Financial Management degrees at the University of Pretoria. Michael has obtained a postgraduate certificate in administrative law from the University of the Witwatersrand.

Before joining the Bar, Michael clerked at the Constitutional Court of South Africa for Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng and worked in academia at the University of Johannesburg. He is published in leading peer-reviewed journals.
