Michael Tsele

Michael is a member of the Cape Bar and the Johannesburg Bar. He holds several law degrees from Rhodes University. He has acted as lead counsel and argued cases at the highest level including before the Supreme Court of Appeal and Constitutional Court – in matters ranging from constitutional and local government law to company and insolvency law. He has also been led by some of the country’s foremost silks in matters of significance in both public law and commercial law.
His practice is primarily focused on the superior courts and entails a mixture of public and private law, with a particular emphasis on judicial review and aspects of commercial law. He has appeared in specialist forums such as the Electoral Court, where he has been a regular feature over the last couple of years. Other fora in which he has appeared include the Equality Court, Land Claims Court, Competition Tribunal amongst others. In public law, he regularly acts for regulatory bodies, municipalities, and political parties; in commercial law, he has been briefed in complex, high value disputes involving company, construction and insolvency law. He has represented major advertising, insurance companies and parastatal entities in opposed motion and trial disputes.
Michael is also involved in academia – he currently serves as an honorary research associate at Rhodes University, where he previously worked for two years as a part-time lecturer teaching constitutional litigation to LLB students. He has published numerous articles in leading peer-reviewed law journals; his work in this regard has been judicially cited with approval in reported judgments of the superior courts in matters ranging from constitutional law to intellectual property law. He has also acted as a peer reviewer for local and international law journals.”
