Peter Lazarus SC

Peter joined the Bar in 1996 and took silk in 2014. He specializes in administrative law, environmental law and mining law and has appeared in all divisions of the High Court of South Africa, the Supreme Court of Appeal and the Constitutional Court.

He has served as an acting judge in the Gauteng Provincial Division, Pretoria and as the Chairman of the Appeal Board appointed by the Minister of Agriculture under the Genetically Modified Organisms Act. He has lectured in the fields of environmental law and mining law at Wits University and has authored numerous articles in these fields. He is also an advocacy trainer at the Johannesburg Bar.

Before joining the bar, he was a member of the drafting teams for the South African Water Law review process (which ultimately led to the promulgation of the National Water Act) and the South African Environmental Law review process (which resulted in amendments to the National Environmental Management Ac and the Environmental Impact Assessment regulations). He was the co-founder and managing member of Environmental Options CC – a multidisciplinary environmental consultancy and was also the co-founder and managing director of Skyriders Access Specialists (Pty) Ltd – South Africa’s first and largest technical rope access company.

He remains an active rock climber and practitioner of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
