Philip took silk on 25 July 1990.

He has an extensive intellectual property practice particularly in the field of trade marks, copyright, patents and designs. His practise area includes banking and currency, exchange control, income tax, administrative law and general commercial litigation and mediation.

He was trained and accredited as a commercial mediator by London based Centre for Effective Dispute Resolution (CEDR) in 2008.  He has taken part in numerous commercial mediations as both a mediator and an adviser to the parties during the course of mediations.  The parties involved in such mediation proceedings have included South African and overseas corporations as well as South African individuals.

Philip has been appointed to act as Judge of the North Gauteng High Court for varying periods during 1992, 1996, 2001, 2003, 2004 and 2011.
