Zaheera Hoosen

Zaheera is an admitted advocate of the High Court of South Africa and an accredited mediator.

She is a member of the Johannesburg Society of Advocates (“JSA”) and the General Council of the Bar of South Africa (“GCB”).

Zaheera graduated from the University of the Witwatersrand in 2007, where she obtained her LLB degree. Prior to joining the JSA for pupillage, she practiced as an attorney for approximately 7 years in the fields of corporate and commercial law.

During 2015, Zaheera completed her pupillage in the fields of intellectual property and competition law, under the mentorship of Adv. Gavin Marriott at Group One Advocates.

Her private law practice is in the following fields: commercial litigation and arbitrations, insolvency, business rescue, liquidations, access to information, construction, mining and environmental law, telecommunications, media and entertainment law (particularly defamation and privacy), sports law; trusts and international law. Her
public law practice is in the fields of administrative law and constitutional litigation.

She has appeared in the Constitutional Court; various High Courts; Labour Court; and at arbitrations, tribunals and mediations. She has acted for many large, national, and global corporations in significant disputes.

In 2019, she became an accredited mediator and conducts mediations as mediator and advises parties in mediations. She has appeared in commercial and sports law mediations. She is on the panel of mediators of the Arbitration Foundation of South Africa (“AFSA”).

In 2024, she was appointed by the Minister of Finance to the Panel of Tax Board Chairpersons for the period of 2024 until 2029.

She is currently pursuing a Certificate Course in Advanced Labour Law at the University of Pretoria.

Zaheera has served as a member of Group One’s Pupillage Committee. She also serves in various sub-committees of the JSA. Since 2022, she serves as a member of the General Council of the Bar of South Africa’s Rules Committee which provides comments to the Rules Board for Courts of Law on proposed amendments to various rules of court.
